Proposal dossier “Cathedral and Churches of Echmiatsinand the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots”, nomination for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, 1999
Artyom Grigoryan has developed an application proposal for the inscription of the "Cathedral and Churches of Echmiadzin, the archaeological site of Zvartnots" on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Three separate areas are proposed for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List:
1. The first area occupies 32.2 hectares and includes the Cathedral of St Echmiadzin, the Church of St Gayane and the surrounding protection zone.
2. The second area occupies 25.3 hectares and includes the St Hripsime Church, the St Shoghakat Church and the surrounding protection zone.
3. The third area occupies 18.8 hectares and includes the archaeological site of Zvartnots with the remains of the temple and Royal Palace and the surrounding protection zone.
The proposal includes a detailed historical and architectural analysis of the city of Echmiadzin, its monuments, groups of monuments, the potential for economic development, infrastructure features. It also presents the role of valuable cultural heritage as an incentive for economic and tourism development and substantiates its importance not only for Armenia and the region but also on a global scale.
