The reconstruction concept of the city of Tsaghkadzor
The city of Tsaghkadzor is one of the best examples of the harmonious combination of active urban development in one of the most unique landscapes in Armenia. The harmony between the natural landscape and residential buildings is emphasized by one of the most famous medieval monuments in Armenia, the Kecharis Monastery Complex (9th–13th centuries). During the period of intensive construction in Tsaghkadzor, from 1950-1960, this harmonious natural and town-planning system was violated: in the most important areas of the village, low-quality buildings were erected.
In the reconstruction concept of Tsaghkadzor, along with the study of the functional organization of the city (the issues of changing its spatial structure), solutions are proposed to restore the significant urban planning qualities of the historical village as well as for harmonious development following the growing needs of the city. These decisions provided for the expansion of the sphere of compositional influence of the Kecharis Monastery Complex in the urban structure and increased its urban significance.
